12 Oct First Open Door Helicopter Flight!
Had the chance to experience my first open door helicopter flight for an industrial shoot and I’m completely hooked! My first thoughts were how small this two-prop Robinson 22 was…my goodness. Oh, and the Pilot sits on the right.
I was called on to take some construction progress images for Molto Properties based out of Chicago. Aerials were standard. My only concern was making sure I had the correct camera settings…didn’t want to screw up this first flight by ending up with blurry images. Based on my research I settled on ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/1250sec. Using the Canon 24-70L f/2.8 lens, I knew I would have plenty of DoF to work with.
Hearing the chatter between the pilot and flight control was new to me, this development was so close to the airport that we had to hover for about 5 minutes before our route was clear.
The last time I had a feeling like this was when I went scuba diving…makes sense too since you’re basically doing the same thing except you’re in the air. Everything turned out well regarding the images and I plan on getting back in the air very soon.
